Grooming your Yorkie Puppy
Grooming your new yorkie puppy is easy and also a great time for bonding.
Run a pin brush through your puppy's coat every day and before bathing.
Place a rubber mat in the sink for your puppies stability.
Clean the puppies ears with a cotton ball and mild ear cleanser.
Now is a good time to brush his teeth, a finger brush will make the job easier, found at any pet supply store. Always use a toothpaste made for dogs.
Bathe your puppy with a tearless puppy shampoo, there are many good ones on
the market, I like "Espree puppy shampoo".
While bathing the puppy talk softly to him, this will help keep him calm.
Rinse all shampoo out thoroughly and use a conditioner.
Dry your puppy with a towel then blow dry half way on low or medium heat
before brushing. Be sure your puppy is fully dry, you do not want him to get a
chill.
Trim the top 1/3 of his ears, front and back with a mustache trimmer.
I recommend "Wahls" mustache trimmer, found at walmart.
This gives your puppy a polished look.
Trim nails, always do this after a bath when nails are softer.
I use human baby nail clippers on puppies until the nails become too
large for them, then use a regular dog nail trimmer.
Keep "Kwik stop" on hand for any bleeding in case you cut a nail too short.
Dab on with a Q tip.
Use your mustache trimmer to remove hair from the pads of his feet, if not
trimmed he will have a hard time getting traction on wood or tile flooring.
Trim the hair around the front and back of the paws with scissors, rounding like a cats paw.
Carefully trim the hairs around the rectum. You must always keep this area clean of excess hair. Check your puppy's rear every day.
For quick clean ups in-between baths I recommend un-scented baby wipes,
perfect for little boys that dribble urine on their coats.
Give a kiss and a hug and you're done!
You have bonded with your puppy and saved time and expense by grooming
yourself.
Here are some ideas for your adult Yorkie's next hair cut.
